Beautifying the Soul

How much time do we spend in the mirror, searching for imperfections and fixing our blemishes? What about the appearance of our souls? How do we beautify the spirit? This group is dedicated to find, discuss, and share the ways to beautify our souls.

Introducing the The Way of Ihsan: Perfecting the Spirit

"...By the soul, and the One who made it well,

then inspired it with its (instincts of) evil and piety,

success is really attained by him who purifies it,

and failure is really suffered by him who pollutes it."
[91:7-10]

The Soul. It is the inward mystery within the crust of our bodies where a shining light is found in the darkness of the universe.

O Prophet! Truly We have sent thee as a Witness, a Bearer of Glad Tidings, and Warner,-

And as one who invites to God’s (grace) by His leave, and as a lamp spreading light.
[33:46-47]

Like the lamp glowing with light from Paradise, our beloved Messenger and Prophet passed his moonlight, by the will of Allah, across the vast sea of time -past and present- so that we might find spiritual gems within the oceans of our animalistic desires. This light radiates so brightly that we sometimes are blinded by the very blessings it bestows upon us.

We search deep in the bowels of our planet for gems and rocks to give us wealth and status. We wear the rubies, diamonds and pearls, and flash them about in pride in search of an observer; looking for a compliment, a smile, anything to gain the hearts of the masses. Yet we have forgotten the priceless gems within ourselves which relieve our souls from not only this world, but all of creation. Gems that when worn, glisten like the smiling faces of Houris beneath the everlasting shade of His Throne. We find gems like contentment, patience, fear, humility, gratefulness, love, honor, chivalry, selflessness, sacrifice, and a myriad of other attributes that continue to reveal themselves with each drop of remembrance that falls from our lips.

With remembrance of Allah, realizations set in, and with them comes Divine aid from arenas that we have no conception of. These gems, of seductive quality, are constantly attracting only those who can see through the "topsoil"; those who can see the surreptitious movements of the wise.

These are people engrossed in the ways of "Ihsan". They see no barriers except the deficiencies of their own desire. May Allah give us the guidance we need to follow their footsteps. Ameen

Let us share these gems with each other and find ways to polish them so they will gleam on the Day of Judgement.

Al-Fath 48:29
Muhammad is God's Apostle;and those who are [truly] with him are firm and unyielding towards all deniers of the truth,[yet]full of mercy towards one another.Thou canst see them bowing down, prostrating themselves [in prayer],seeking favor with God and [His]goodly acceptance:their marks are on their faces, traced by prostration. This is their parable in the Torah as well as their parable in the Injil (Gospel): [they are] like a seed that brings forth its shoot, and [in the end] stands firm upon its stem, delighting the sowers ....
[Thus will God cause the believers to grow in strength,]so that through them He might confound the deniers of the truth.[But] unto such of them as many [yet] attain to faith and do righteous deeds,God has promised forgiveness and a reward supreme. Ameen

assalaamu a'laikum
It's funny how we think we have it all when we first become muslim, and in some ways we do; but as we older and mature we see as just mentioned , it's not all those things and people around us it is us! Our dificiencies lie in the fact of our relying on and trusting in the qadrullah. Our personal relationship with Allah; "Eeyaka Nasta'een" only you we ask, the prophet-saw-told just a few of his-saw-never to ask anyone for anything! Why just a few, because the weaknessness of the soul in craving to feel that man must answer all my questions and issues, thus thinking himself to have all answers needed, (whether consciously or subconsciously). In my own quest to not any for anything I found out just how feeble I really am and weak where I use to think I was strong. This feeling always bring to mind the situation of taif, and not only did the prophet-saw-not get upset, but he asked Allah- WHAT IT SOMETHING HE DID!!! I almost never (in the past??) would even look at myself when someone did something against me, (knowing there are shariah rights of course)
but when trying to get close to Allah you cut all those connections and only look at the one you love with all the emotions that come along with it; Thus we must ask ourselves "WHO DO YA LOVE"?

to stop ones ego from persuading you to follow it[very difficult when the persuasion is given a good backing, but your heart will tell you other wise, listen to it carefully.

Everyone, thanks for your comments on backbiting. I just put up a discussion on it. I'd like to hear your thoughts, comments, and experiences regarding it and the reasons behind it. Feel free to share what you know on the subject.

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

I think back biting is a difficult one because it so easy, i try not to judge them as i can not read their hearts, does not matter what my opinions of them might be, i think it would be useful for any of the group who can help recognise what levels of backbiting there are and maybe we can try to start working from the worst up down, we have to be realistic, we can not just stop,we need the ammunitions and know the targets and hopefully we can all help each other, and maybe by doing that we can arm ourselves better. Otherwise it will be like going to the battlefield unprepared and being shot down even before we step in.
Maryam Comment by Maryam on May 15, 2009 at 5:06pm
Yes of course. Speak good or remain silent. But... it's a struggle. Ask Allah to help you as I am doing. Analyze before you speak. Very important. Allah can forgive you any sins. But slander and backbiting, you got to get forgiveness from the person you slandered or backbit first. Very hard. Harder than asking Allah for forgiveness....
